    Swiss Customs

Swiss Import Duty & VAT Calculator

Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, so TARIC does not apply. Enter a tariff code and the value of your goods to see the duty, the import VAT, and what clearance actually costs.

Four digits is enough — Swiss duty is uniform across a chapter, unlike the EU. Origin rarely changes the answer: industrial duty is 0% from everywhere.

Why Swiss import costs are not what importers expect

Switzerland abolished customs duty on all industrial goods — chapters 25 to 97 of the tariff — on 1 January 2024. For most shipments the duty line is now simply zero, from any origin, whether or not a free-trade agreement covers the goods. What remains is import VAT at 8.1% standard or 2.6% reduced, charged on the customs value including transport to the Swiss border and any duty. Agriculture is the exception that still matters: chapters 1 to 24 carry real Swiss duty, assessed by weight rather than value, which is why a food shipment can cost far more to clear than machinery of the same value.

The CHF 5 minimum tax, and why small parcels clear free

Swiss customs does not collect import tax when the computed amount comes to less than CHF 5. At the standard 8.1% rate that threshold is reached at roughly CHF 62 of customs value, so consignments below that clear without tax — though your carrier will still charge its own clearance fee, which is often the larger number on a small parcel. This calculator applies the threshold to the computed figure, exactly as customs does.

    Answers to common questions

On industrial goods, correct — Switzerland unilaterally abolished duty on chapters 25 to 97 on 1 January 2024. It applies to every origin and needs no free-trade agreement or proof of origin. Agricultural goods in chapters 1 to 24 still carry duty, and so does a short list of exceptions in chapters 35 and 38.
